DMARC record parameters

A single TXT line on the _dmarc subdomain. Only two parameters are required.

v=DMARC1 The version. It must come first or the record is invalid.
p= The policy: none, quarantine or reject. Always start with none.
rua= The address for aggregate reports. Technically optional, but DMARC is nearly pointless without it.
pct= The share of mail the policy applies to. It lets you roll out a strict policy gradually: 10 per cent, then 50.
sp= The policy for subdomains. Without it they inherit the main one, which often surprises people.

What not to do

Jumping straight to reject The strictest policy on an unverified domain cuts off your own mail. Your customers will tell you.
A record with no rua The policy applies but you see nothing. Reports are the real value of DMARC; without them it is almost useless.
Forgetting subdomains Campaigns go from mail.domain.com while the policy covers only the root domain.
DMARC without SPF or DKIM It sits on top of them. With neither check configured the record achieves nothing.

Create a DMARC record online

Choose a policy (start with none, monitoring only), specify the email for aggregate rua reports and, if needed, the application percentage — the generator assembles a ready DMARC record. Add it to DNS as a TXT record for the _dmarc.yourdomain subdomain.

The right rollout strategy: a month or two on p=none collecting reports, analyzing who sends mail in your name, tuning SPF/DKIM for all legitimate sources — and only then quarantine, later reject.
