What blacklists are

Databases of addresses seen sending spam. Mail servers consult them before accepting a message.

Mail never arrives The server refuses the connection outright. The message appears neither in the inbox nor in spam — it simply does not exist.
Usually the neighbours On shared hosting hundreds of sites share one address. One spammer among them is enough.
Lists differ in severity Spamhaus blocks almost everywhere; smaller lists are consulted by few. Being listed carries different weight per database.
There is always a way out Every list has a removal form. Fix the cause first, or the address is back within a day.

How an IP gets listed

A hacked site on the server The most common cause. A hole in an outdated plugin turns the server into a spam relay, and the owner finds out last.
Mailing without consent A purchased list and a bulk offer. A handful of “this is spam” complaints and the address is listed.
An open relay A misconfiguration lets outsiders send through your server. Such addresses are found and blocked fast.
A tainted address history You were assigned an IP that used to send spam. Lists remember longer than tenants stay.

What to do when you are listed

1 Find the cause Check the sites on the server, the mail logs and the queue. Requesting removal before this is pointless.
2 Close the hole Update the software, change passwords, disable open relaying. The cause must be gone before you apply.
3 Submit the request Each list has its own form. Describe exactly what you fixed — boilerplate requests are processed more slowly.
4 Check again after a day Removal takes anywhere from hours to days. If the address returns, the cause was not fully resolved.

IP blacklist check (RBL)

The service checks an IP address against four of the most influential blacklists at once: Spamhaus ZEN, SpamCop, Barracuda and SORBS. These are the databases half the internet's mail servers consult when deciding to accept or reject your email.

If mail from your server suddenly stops arriving — an RBL check should be the first step. You can get listed via an infected site on the same server, a hacked mailbox or a bad IP "inheritance" from the previous owner. Each database has its own delisting procedure on its site — after fixing the cause, removal takes from hours to a couple of days.

FAQ

What are blacklists (RBL/DNSBL)?
These are databases of IP addresses that sent spam. If your server is on such a list, your emails will be blocked or go to spam.
Why did my IP get blacklisted?
Reasons: an infected computer in the network sent spam, a misconfigured mail server, or the address was previously used by a spammer.
How to get off a blacklist?
Fix the cause (stop spam sending), then submit a removal request on the relevant database site. Removal usually takes hours to a few days.
Why check my IP?
If your emails stopped arriving, this is the first thing to check. Being on an RBL is a common cause of mail delivery problems.
