What an IP address can tell you

Technical facts about a connection. It will not identify a person — that is a common misconception.

Provider and autonomous system Who owns the address range. This reveals whether it is home broadband, a mobile carrier or a data centre.
Approximate location The country is reliable, the city much less so. On mobile networks the error can reach hundreds of kilometres.
Connection type A data-centre address means a VPN, proxy or bot. For analytics that is a meaningful signal.
Reverse record The name the address resolves back to. For mail servers, its absence is grounds for suspicion.

When this is useful

Odd traffic in analytics A spike of visits from one country with no orders. Checking the addresses shows whether they are data-centre bots.
A suspicious order A delivery address in one city and a connection from another continent through a VPN — worth a phone call.
Break-in attempts Hundreds of failed logins in the logs. The addresses show whether it is one source or a distributed network.
Mail delivery problems Checking the server address reveals the provider and whether a reverse record exists — both affect spam filtering.

Why the city is often wrong

Data from provider registries The address-to-city mapping comes from registries that update slowly and are not always accurate.
Mobile networks Traffic from a whole region often exits through a single node in the regional capital, so everyone gets the same city.
Corporate networks Branches across a country may reach the internet through head office, so the address points there.
VPNs and proxies They show the server’s city, not the user’s. That is precisely the point of them.

IP address lookup: country, provider, ASN

Enter any IP address — and the service shows the country, region, city, internet provider, owner organization and autonomous system number. All data comes from public GeoIP databases and RIR registries; there is no private information here.
