Why decode a QR code

A phone camera opens the link immediately without showing it. Sometimes it is wiser to look first.

A code in a letter or invoice Scammers stick their own labels over genuine ones on terminals and invoices. Decoding shows the address before you go.
Checking before print A print run of business cards with the wrong link is money thrown away. Read one code before it goes to press.
The camera will not read it The image is blurred or curved in the photo. Uploading the file often works where the camera gives up.
It is not a link inside A code can hold a Wi-Fi password, a contact card or plain text. Decoding shows the content in readable form.

What a code can contain

A link The most common case. Sometimes a shortener that redirects onward, so the real address only appears after the jump.
Wi-Fi credentials Network name and password. The phone connects by itself and you never see the password without decoding.
A contact card Name, phone and email as a business card. It goes straight into the address book.
Payment details An account and amount for a banking app. This is where a swapped code costs the most.

How to avoid a fake code

A sticker over a sticker Fraudsters paste codes over the official ones on parking meters and terminals. Feel the edge — a fake often peels.
A lookalike domain One letter differs, or a Cyrillic character stands in for a Latin one. Decoding shows the full address — read it carefully.
An unexpected payment request A fine on your windscreen or a leaflet about a debt. Official bodies do not operate this way.
A shortened link It hides the real destination. Payment codes never use shorteners — that alone is a strong warning sign.

FAQ

Is it safe to upload a QR code here?
Yes. Recognition runs entirely in your browser: the image is never sent to a server and never stored. That makes the tool safe even for photos containing a Wi-Fi password or personal contacts.
Why is the code not recognised?
The usual causes are a blurry or too small photo, heavy glare, a cropped edge of the code, or a shot taken at a sharp angle. Try cropping the image so the QR fills most of the frame, or take the photo straight on in better light. Damaged or covered codes cannot be recovered.
Can I get a Wi-Fi password from a QR code?
Yes, if the code uses the standard WIFI: format — the kind printed in cafés and hotels. We break it down into network name, password and encryption type. This is not hacking: the password is stored in the code itself in plain form, and we simply show what is already there.
Should I open a link from someone else’s QR code?
Do not rush. QR codes get replaced with stickers on parking meters, posters and even invoices — this is called quishing. That is why we show the address first and warn separately when it points to a shortener. Look at the domain: if it does not match what you expect, do not enter any data there.
