How to Appear in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Copilot: AI SEO in 2026

How to Appear in ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Copilot: AI SEO in 2026

A buyer no longer has to start with a page of blue links. They can ask an assistant to compare website agencies, recommend a CRM for a small store or explain the realistic cost of SEO. The answer may mention only a few brands and cite a short list of sources.

Traditional search has not disappeared. AI discovery sits next to it, and strong pages often gain visibility in both channels. That is why AI SEO should start with a crawlable, indexable and useful website rather than a collection of new hacks.

Run the page through the AI readiness audit if you need a fast baseline. It can identify technical barriers. It cannot promise a citation because no tool controls the final source selection.

The short answer

A site needs four things to earn visibility in ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Copilot:

  1. Eligible pages that return 200, can be indexed and are accessible to the relevant crawlers.
  2. Content that answers a specific question and includes evidence, examples, original data or first-hand experience.
  3. Consistent signals that clarify who the company is, what it offers and why it is credible.
  4. Measurement that covers citations, brand mentions, referral sessions and conversions.

There is no universal submission button for ChatGPT. There is also no special schema type that guarantees AI visibility. The work combines technical SEO, content, entities, reputation and analytics.

SEO, AEO, GEO and AI SEO

Term Main focus Practical outcome
SEO traditional search results rankings, clicks and conversions
AEO concise answers to questions extracted answers and answer features
GEO citations and mentions in generated responses visibility in ChatGPT, AI Overviews and Copilot
AI SEO a practical umbrella term technical SEO, content, entities and AI measurement

These disciplines overlap. Google states that its generative search features rely on core Search ranking and quality systems. Ahrefs research points in the same direction: pages that rank in Google are more likely to retain citations in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

For many sites, the correct starting point is still professional SEO: indexation, architecture, internal links, speed, content and domain authority.

How AI systems select sources

An assistant does not browse the whole web from scratch for every answer. Depending on the product and query, it may use a search index, a dedicated crawler, a search partner or knowledge already available to the model.

A simplified retrieval process has four stages:

  1. The system expands a complex request into several search or grounding queries.
  2. Retrieval finds candidate pages.
  3. The system evaluates relevance, quality, freshness and agreement between sources.
  4. The model writes an answer and selects some sources for visible citations.

This is why a page can rank for a broad keyword yet never appear for a detailed conversational prompt. It covers the topic but does not resolve the specific job behind the question.

Step 1. Remove technical barriers

Check the following before rewriting content:

  • the primary URL returns 200;
  • no noindex or conflicting canonical blocks eligibility;
  • Googlebot, Bingbot and the required AI crawlers can reach the page;
  • meaningful text exists in the initial HTML;
  • the page works without login, cookies or regional restrictions;
  • internal links and the XML sitemap lead to it;
  • the server responds consistently and quickly.

OpenAI separates OAI-SearchBot, which supports search visibility, from GPTBot, which may collect content for model training. A publisher can allow one and block the other. Read the full distinction in the guide to robots.txt and AI crawlers and verify the live rules with the AI crawler checker.

If the URL is missing from the core index, diagnose why the page is not being indexed before trying to optimize it for generated answers.

Step 2. Target questions, not isolated keywords

People use detailed prompts:

  • which SEO approach fits a newly launched service website;
  • what SEO costs for a store with 5,000 products;
  • whether a local clinic should start with Ads or SEO;
  • how to evaluate an agency before signing a contract;
  • why traffic increased while leads did not.

Collect 30 to 50 questions from sales calls, email, support, Search Console and customer interviews. Label each one by intent: explanation, comparison, vendor selection, price or troubleshooting.

One URL should own one core intent. Do not publish five nearly identical pages for AI SEO, GEO, AEO, ChatGPT optimization and generative search optimization. These terms often express the same need and should support one authoritative resource.

Step 3. Publish verifiable information

Generic summaries are easy to replace. Give the reader information that does not exist in dozens of interchangeable articles:

  • real prices and pricing logic;
  • a case study with starting conditions and measured results;
  • a comparison table with explicit criteria;
  • screenshots, templates or a repeatable method;
  • original data with a clear methodology;
  • an expert view with limitations and exceptions;
  • a visible review or update date;
  • mistakes observed across real projects.

Start each section with a direct answer, then add nuance and an example. This structure helps the reader scan quickly and gives retrieval systems a clear passage to understand.

Step 4. Clarify the brand entity

Assistants can evaluate a company more confidently when independent sources use the same name, domain, service description, location and expert identities.

Audit the consistency of:

  • the company name and domain;
  • service descriptions;
  • address, phone number and opening hours;
  • founder and author profiles;
  • portfolio, reviews and case studies;
  • relevant industry listings and partner pages.

Do not manufacture hundreds of mentions. A small set of real cases, customer reviews and authoritative references is more useful than a network of empty profiles.

Step 5. Use structured data for clarity

Schema.org can clarify the page type, author, company, product, address and breadcrumb trail. It does not provide an AI ranking switch.

Useful types often include Organization, LocalBusiness, Article, Product, Offer, BreadcrumbList, Person and a visible, honest FAQPage. Every JSON-LD value should match the content a visitor can see. The Schema.org guide explains implementation mistakes and eligibility limits.

What does not guarantee AI visibility

llms.txt

Google says it does not use llms.txt for generative search ranking or inclusion. Other services may use similar files, but they do not replace indexation, crawlable HTML and useful content.

Keyword-stuffed FAQ sections

Questions should reflect real customer needs. Repeating the same phrase in twenty variations weakens the page.

Mass-produced articles

Large volumes of pages without expertise, data or editing create duplication. Retrieval systems can choose stronger sources that say the same thing with evidence.

A single manual prompt test

Answers vary by wording, search mode, region and date. One screenshot is not a visibility report.

Replacing classic SEO

Organic visibility remains closely connected to AI citations. Use the guide on getting to the top of Google to strengthen the shared foundation.

How to measure AI search visibility

Clicks tell only part of the story. An assistant may mention a brand without a link, and the user may later search the name or visit directly.

Track four groups of metrics:

  1. Citations. Monitor which URLs appear for a stable set of prompts. Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations, cited pages and grounding queries. Google offers a Generative AI performance report where available.
  2. Brand mentions. Record unlinked mentions, list position, context and nearby competitors.
  3. Referral traffic. Build a GA4 segment for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and other assistants. OpenAI also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs.
  4. Business outcomes. Compare leads, sales, average order value and conversion rate against other channels.
Metric Question answered Review cycle
prompt citation share are your pages being retrieved weekly
brand mention share is your brand entering the shortlist weekly
AI referral sessions how many users clicked monthly
AI conversions does the channel create value monthly
cited pages which assets work monthly

A 90-day action plan

Days 1 to 15

  • audit indexation, canonicals, robots rules, status codes and rendering;
  • build a set of 30 to 50 customer questions;
  • record baseline mentions, citations and referrals;
  • check brand data consistency;
  • select five pages with the highest commercial potential.

Days 16 to 45

  • replace vague introductions with direct answers;
  • add first-party data, prices, criteria, examples and authors;
  • improve headings, internal links and structured data;
  • create one page for each missing intent;
  • merge or remove duplicates.

Days 46 to 75

  • publish transparent case studies;
  • collect genuine customer reviews;
  • update expert and company profiles;
  • earn relevant partner or editorial references;
  • align the brand description across trusted sources.

Days 76 to 90

  • rerun the same prompt set;
  • compare cited pages, mentions and referral sessions;
  • identify pages that earn citations but no clicks;
  • reinforce pages showing early traction;
  • plan the next quarter using evidence.

When to expect results

Technical changes can become visible after recrawling. Content and authority work usually takes weeks or months. A new domain needs more time because search and AI systems have less history and fewer third-party confirmations.

A realistic first-quarter goal is to remove technical barriers, gain initial visibility for part of the target question set and establish reliable measurement. Fixed citation deadlines are not credible because generated answers remain volatile.

Pre-publication checklist

  • one clear primary question;
  • a direct answer near the start;
  • first-party proof, an example, data or a method;
  • visible author and update date;
  • primary sources for factual claims;
  • indexable, crawler-accessible URL;
  • consistent canonical, hreflang and structured data;
  • internal links to a service and next action;
  • a useful conversion path;
  • analytics events and source tracking.

Conclusion

AI search adds a new decision layer between the customer and the website. Visibility comes from being easy to crawl, understand, verify and recommend.

Fix technical eligibility first. Then answer real customer questions with evidence no generic summary can replace. Measure citations, mentions and conversions together. For a scoped plan, review BB STUDIO pricing or send your site for an audit.

Frequently asked questions

No. A team can remove technical blocks, improve pages, strengthen brand evidence and measure citations. The AI system still makes the final source selection, and answers change over time.

Not for Google AI Overviews. Google says the file does not affect generative search visibility. Prioritize indexation, crawlable HTML, useful content and internal links first.

No. GEO extends SEO with brand mentions, citations and AI-specific reporting. Search indexes and core ranking systems remain important retrieval foundations.

Focused and verifiable content tends to be most useful: comparisons, how-to guides, research, case studies, pricing pages, primary sources and clearly authored expertise.

Combine referral data, UTM parameters, analytics events, CRM attribution, manual mention monitoring and a direct lead-source question. Some influence will appear later as branded search or direct traffic.
