We create digital solutions that work for businesses
You can set up Google Ads yourself, but the process should not begin with the “Create campaign” button. First define the business goal, calculate an allowable cost per lead, prepare the landing page and verify conversion tracking. Only then should you select keywords, write ads and allocate a budget.
For a business with existing search demand, a Search campaign is often the clearest first test. It reaches people already searching for a product or service. However, a relevant query does not guarantee a sale. Results depend on intent, offer, landing page, measurement and lead handling.
If you want the research, setup and ongoing optimization handled for you, see the BB STUDIO Google Ads service.
Write down the following before opening the interface:
one priority service or closely related product group;
the service area;
the primary action: purchase, form, call or booking;
average order value and gross profit;
the percentage of leads that become sales;
a monthly test budget;
the page visitors will land on;
the person responsible for responding to leads.
Do not send every ad to the homepage when the query concerns a specific service. The visitor should immediately see a relevant headline, terms, proof, price or pricing method and a clear next step. A focused landing page may be enough for one offer.
“Get more clicks” is not a business outcome. A service website may use a completed form or qualified call as its primary conversion. An online store should measure purchases and pass order value.
Use this planning formula:
Allowable lead CPA = gross profit per sale × acquisition share of profit × lead-to-sale rate.
If gross profit is UAH 8,000, the business can spend 30% of it on acquisition, and 25% of qualified leads become customers:
8,000 × 0.30 × 0.25 = UAH 600
The approximate ceiling is UAH 600 per qualified lead. This is a business constraint, not a Google forecast.
The budget should generate enough clicks to test demand. Start with the forecast CPC in Keyword Planner:
Monthly media budget = desired clicks × forecast CPC.
At a UAH 30 CPC, 500 visits require roughly UAH 15,000. If the page converts 4%, the model suggests 20 enquiries and a UAH 750 CPA. Actual performance can differ because of competition, seasonality, traffic quality and the page.
Keep media spend separate from setup or management fees. The full breakdown is covered in how much Google Ads costs in 2026.
Check the page on mobile and desktop. It should answer five questions quickly:
What exactly is being offered?
Who is it for and where is it available?
Why should the visitor choose this company?
What does it cost, or how is a quote requested?
What should the visitor do next?
Test the form, click-to-call link and confirmation state. Do not advertise a promotion that is absent from the landing page. Consistency between keyword, ad and page improves both user trust and campaign efficiency.
Without conversion tracking, the platform sees clicks but cannot distinguish the visits that create business value. A service website may track:
successful form submissions;
calls that exceed a useful duration;
phone clicks as a secondary action;
messenger clicks as a secondary action;
bookings or payments as primary actions.
Do not make every page view a primary conversion. Automated bidding may optimize for the easiest action rather than the outcome that matters. Primary conversions should guide bidding; secondary actions can remain available for analysis.
Test each event in debug mode and submit a real test form. For a detailed analytics walkthrough, use the guide to setting up Google Analytics 4.
Do not mix unrelated services, regions and intents in one ad group.
| Level | Example | Main control |
|---|---|---|
| Account | Company | access, billing, measurement |
| Campaign | Apartment renovation — Kyiv | budget, location, bid strategy |
| Ad group | Turnkey renovation | related keywords and ads |
| Ad | Offer for the group | message and landing page |
Create separate campaigns when budget, geography, language, goal or priority differs. Create separate ad groups when queries need different copy or a different page.
Start with queries that imply buying or ordering: “price”, “service”, “near me”, “turnkey”, and city modifiers. Informational searches such as “how to do it yourself” may support content marketing but can waste a service campaign’s budget.
| Match type | Syntax | Best initial use |
|---|---|---|
| Exact | [apartment renovation kyiv] |
steering the highest-value intent |
| Phrase | "apartment renovation kyiv" |
controlled expansion to close queries |
| Broad | apartment renovation kyiv |
scaling with Smart Bidding and reliable conversions |
Exact match can include searches with the same meaning or intent; it is not always literal. Broad match reaches more related searches and requires stronger conversion data and search-term control. A new account with a limited budget can begin with priority exact and phrase terms, then test broader reach separately.
Negative keywords prevent ads from showing for unwanted searches. Common candidates include:
free;
jobs, vacancy, salary;
course, training;
DIY, tutorial;
used, rental or wholesale when unavailable;
irrelevant cities and districts.
Do not paste a large generic list without review because it may block valuable commercial searches. After launch, inspect the Search terms report and add real irrelevant phrases.
For a local business, target only the cities, regions or radius it can serve. In advanced location options, decide whether you need people who are in or regularly in the target area rather than everyone who merely shows interest in it.
Language targeting is not a literal query-language filter. Google may consider the languages a person understands. If offers and pages differ by language, separate the campaigns or at least make sure each ad matches its landing page.
Do not restrict ads to office hours if visitors can submit a form at any time. Gather data first, then compare lead quality and CPA by hour.
Responsive search ads combine multiple headlines and descriptions according to context. Supply distinct ideas rather than minor rewrites.
Cover these elements:
product or service name;
location;
a specific advantage;
delivery time or working format;
price, if stable;
proof such as experience, warranty or project count;
a direct action such as request a quote or book a call.
Descriptions should explain conditions, address objections and make the next step clear. Add relevant assets: sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, phone, location and images. Pin headlines only when a statement must remain in a fixed position, because excessive pinning limits combinations.
| Situation | Possible starting point | Control |
|---|---|---|
| Conversions are not verified | fix measurement first | whether a real enquiry is recorded |
| Initial traffic is needed | Maximize Clicks with a CPC cap | search-term quality |
| Conversions work | Maximize Conversions | budget, CPA and lead quality |
| Stable history and CPA goal | Maximize Conversions with target CPA | volume and average CPA |
| Store passes revenue | Maximize Conversion Value / target ROAS | revenue, margin and ROAS |
Automation cannot repair bad conversion data. If page views, menu clicks and spam forms enter the Conversions column, the algorithm will optimize toward them. Avoid an unrealistically low target CPA without sufficient history because delivery may fall sharply.

ad groups are tightly themed;
keyword match types are intentional;
the initial negative list is present;
ads use relevant final URLs;

policy and approval status were checked.
Avoid changing everything every day, but do not leave a new campaign unattended.
confirm impressions and clicks;
look for abnormal spend;
review early search terms;
retest conversions;
resolve disapproved ads or assets.
add negatives;
compare ad groups, devices, locations and hours;
assess lead quality, not only volume;
improve weak copy and landing pages;
do not scale until sales data can be reconciled.
calculate CPC, conversion rate and CPA;
match advertising leads to CRM or call records;
move budget toward profitable segments;
document hypotheses for the next test;
review bidding if enough reliable data exists.
| Metric | Formula | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| CTR | clicks / impressions × 100% | ad relevance and appeal |
| CPC | spend / clicks | cost of a visit |
| CVR | conversions / clicks × 100% | ability of traffic and page to produce action |
| CPA | spend / conversions | cost per lead or sale |
| ROAS | ad revenue / spend × 100% | return on ad spend |
| Lost impression share | Google Ads data | budget or Ad Rank limitations |
A high CTR does not compensate for missing sales. A low CPA can also mislead when forms generate poor-quality leads. Gross profit and confirmed customers remain the final test.
Launching without a verified conversion.
Placing every service in one ad group.
Using broad keywords without Smart Bidding, negatives and search-term review.
Sending all traffic to the homepage.
Using an overly broad region or interest-based location setting for a local service.
Optimizing only for CTR and CPC.
Treating micro-conversions as primary goals.
Making random daily budget and bid changes.
Failing to reconcile leads with sales.
Scaling before fixing the landing page.
If campaigns are active but enquiries are missing, follow the diagnostic guide to why Google Ads is not generating leads. When users click but do not act, run a website UX audit and review the broader reasons behind website traffic with no leads.
DIY can work for one clear service, a small target area, a ready landing page and an owner who can review data weekly. Multiple markets, large catalogues, expensive clicks, complex attribution or a substantial budget increase the cost of mistakes.

A sound Google Ads setup begins with sales economics and measurement, not ad copy. Define allowable CPA, prepare the page, test primary conversions, structure campaigns by intent, add commercial keywords and negatives, and evaluate confirmed leads and sales after launch.
The first month is a controlled test. It should answer three questions: which searches bring the right people, which page persuades them and how much the business can afford to pay for a customer.
Yes, for a simple Search campaign with one offer. You must be able to verify conversions, review search terms and assess lead quality rather than clicks alone.
It depends on forecast CPC, the number of clicks needed and allowable CPA. The test should generate enough data to support a decision, not just a few random visits.
For a service with established search demand, Search is often the first test. The right type still depends on the goal, offer and customer journey.
Broad match can scale campaigns when paired with Smart Bidding and reliable conversion data. Test it carefully in a new, limited-budget account and review search terms.
Check technical issues immediately and search terms from the first days. Make business conclusions only after enough clicks and reliable conversions have accumulated.
