What the official NBU rate is

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) sets the official hryvnia exchange rate against foreign currencies every day. This rate is used for accounting and taxes: foreign-currency income is converted at it, reports are prepared with it, and customs payments are calculated with it. Banks and exchange offices buy and sell currency at their own rates, which differ from the NBU rate.

An official rate applies to every calendar day, including weekends and public holidays: on those days, the rate set on the last working day applies. The tool shows rates from the NBU’s open data, starting from 1 January 2015.

Which rate a FOP uses for foreign-currency income

A FOP (Ukrainian sole proprietor) on the single tax, Ukraine’s simplified tax system, who is paid in dollars or euros converts the payment into hryvnias at the NBU rate for the date the money reaches the account (clause 292.7 of the Tax Code of Ukraine). The rate and the date at which you sell the currency do not affect income: that is a separate transaction.

Example: on 1 October, USD 2,000 arrives in your foreign-currency account. Take the NBU rate for 1 October and multiply: that is your income in hryvnias. Record it in the income ledger and calculate the 5% single tax for group 3 from it.

The tax itself is easy to work out in the FOP tax calculator, which also uses the NBU rate for the date of receipt. Payment and reporting deadlines are in the tax calendar.

How to use it

  • Pick a date; today’s date is already set. The “previous day” and “next day” buttons step through the rates one day at a time.
  • The main currencies (US dollar, euro, zloty, pound, franc, Czech koruna, Canadian dollar, yen) are at the top of the table, with the daily change.
  • Find the other currencies and precious metals by searching for a code or name.
  • The converter turns an amount in foreign currency into hryvnias and back, at the rate for the selected date.

The page address keeps the date: send the link to your accountant, and you will both see the same rate.

FAQ

Which rate does a FOP use for foreign-currency income?
The NBU rate for the date the money is credited to your account (clause 292.7 of the Tax Code of Ukraine). The date you sell the currency and the bank’s rate do not matter.
Is there an NBU rate for weekends and public holidays?
Yes. The official rate is set for every calendar day, so for any date, including a Saturday or Sunday, the tool shows the rate in force.
Why is my bank’s rate different?
Banks buy and sell currency at their own commercial rates, which depend on demand and include a margin. The NBU rate is an accounting rate: taxes and reports are calculated at it, but you cannot buy cash at it.
From what date are rates available?
From 1 January 2015 to today. There are no rates for future dates.
How do I convert foreign currency into hryvnias?
Multiply the amount in foreign currency by the NBU rate for the date you need. The converter does this for you and shows the calculation, for example “1,000.00 USD × 41.2345”.
Can I share the rate for a specific date?
Yes, the page address contains the selected date. Copy the link and send it: the other person will see the same rate.
