WHOIS / RDAP Lookup

Domain owner, registrar and expiry date.

What WHOIS shows

A public domain registry. Some fields are always open; others are hidden for privacy reasons.

Registration date How old the domain is. The first thing anyone assessing a site looks at: a month-old domain and a ten-year-old one tell different stories.
Expiry date When renewal is due. A few days late already takes the site down, and after a month someone else can buy the name.
Registrar The company the domain is registered through. You need this to recover access or transfer the name.
Name servers Where the domain points. When a site fails to load after a migration, this is the field to check.

When WHOIS is genuinely useful

Before buying a domain You will see whether it is free, when registration ends and whether it has changed hands every year.
Checking a contractor The domain should be registered to you, not your developer. The classic trap: you own the site but not the name.
Expiry approaching Reminder emails do not always arrive, and an unrenewed domain is taken offline without ceremony.
Investigation Someone cloned your site on a lookalike domain — WHOIS shows the registrar you can complain to.

Why owner details are hidden

Since 2018 most registrars hide the contact details of private individuals.

Public

Technical data

Dates, registrar, name servers and domain status are always available.

  • Registration and expiry dates
  • Name servers
  • Domain status
vs
Redacted

Personal data

Name, email and phone are replaced by a placeholder or the registrar’s own address.

  • Owner name
  • Contact email
  • Phone and address

Company domains are more often open than private ones. You can usually reach the owner through a registrar form, which forwards the message without revealing the address.

Free WHOIS domain lookup

Find all public information about any domain: who the registrar is, when the domain was registered, when it expires, which name servers and statuses are set. The service uses the modern RDAP protocol — the official successor of classic WHOIS, so the data is always up to date, straight from the registries.

A whois domain check comes in handy when you want to buy a taken domain (see the registration expiry date), verify a suspicious site (freshly registered domains are a common scam sign), or simply forgot which registrar your domain is with. Works with international and national zones alike.

FAQ

What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is a public database about domain owners and parameters. We use the modern RDAP protocol that returns the same info in a structured form.
Why is the owner hidden?
Due to GDPR and privacy policies, registrars hide owners personal data. Technical fields — registrar, dates, NS — remain available.
How to know when a domain expires?
The "Expires" field in results shows the registration expiry date. Renew your domain in advance to avoid losing it.
What do domain statuses mean?
Statuses like clientTransferProhibited protect the domain from unauthorized transfer or deletion. This is a normal safeguard.
