UTM Link Builder

A UTM-tagged link for ads and newsletters.

Quick preset

Your link

UTM tags appear in Google Analytics under traffic acquisition. The main rule is to write them identically across campaigns, otherwise your statistics fall apart into dozens of near-identical rows.

What each parameter means

Five parameters analytics reads from the URL. The first three are required.

utm_source Where the visitor came from: google, facebook, newsletter. The specific platform name.
utm_medium The traffic type: cpc for ads, email for newsletters, social for social networks.
utm_campaign The campaign name. A good place for a month or occasion: black-friday, sale-june.
utm_content Optional. It separates two banners in one campaign so you can see which performs.
utm_term The keyword. Google Ads fills it automatically; it is rarely set by hand.

Mistakes that ruin your reports

Inconsistent capitalisation Facebook and facebook are two different sources to analytics. The report splits into duplicates you cannot merge later.
Tags on internal links A tag inside your own site ends the session and starts a new one. The original source is lost entirely.
Non-Latin characters It turns into unreadable escape sequences in the report. Use Latin letters and hyphens only.
No naming convention Today email, tomorrow mail, next week e-mail. Six months on the report is unreadable.

Where tags genuinely matter

Email campaigns Without tags, clicks from email are counted as direct traffic. You will never see whether the campaign pays off.
Ads outside Google Google Ads links to analytics itself. Everything else — banners, bloggers, partners — needs tags.
Offline materials A tagged QR code on a flyer shows how many people actually came from print.
Comparing variants Two ad texts with different utm_content, and within a week you see which brings more leads.

FAQ

Which tags are required and which are optional?
Three are required: utm_source (where the visitor came from), utm_medium (channel type) and utm_campaign (campaign name). Without them analytics cannot group traffic correctly. Two more — utm_content and utm_term — are for distinguishing several banners inside one campaign or recording the keyword in search advertising.
Why does letter case matter?
Google Analytics treats Facebook and facebook as two different sources. If you write it capitalised in one campaign and lowercase in another, the report shows two rows instead of one and you end up adding the numbers by hand. That is why we lowercase everything by default: it is the simplest way not to spoil your own statistics.
Can UTM tags hurt SEO?
They can, if tagged links end up in your internal linking or in the sitemap: Google would then see several URLs with identical content. The safeguard is simple — every page’s canonical should point to the clean URL without parameters. For external advertising the tags are safe, because such links come from outside and are usually not indexed.
